about

Alexander Massey (b. 1987, Sydney, Australia) is a multidisciplinary artist working in painting, photography and performance. Trained in Fine Arts at Sydney College of the Arts, he set painting aside for fifteen years while building a family and covering extpansive distance on foot and bicycle. His return to the studio emerged from this long period of distance and reflection, shaping a practice exploring motion, memory, and landscape as reflections of time. Massey lives and works in San Francisco, California. He has studied calligraphy under Kaz Tanahashi, Sensei, and his paintings reflect a considered sense of motion shaped by this lineage.

Massey’s work considers motion, memory and landscape as interconnected reflections of time, often placing the body in subtle dialogue with natural or cultural environments. Bench is an ongoing series in which he crafts simple wooden benches and carries them into remote locations where they remain as unobtrusive interventions. Another continuing project, Studies in Motion, involved a twelve hour traversal of San Francisco in which he encountered more than ten thousand artworks across major institutions. The accompanying film observes the cumulative nature of sustained viewing and the contemplative state that arises through prolonged movement.

Massey studied Fine Arts at Sydney College of the Arts and received the Zelda Stedman Traveling Art Scholarship to the University of California. His work is held in private collections internationally.
